Green Smart Magazine : GreenSmart 2010
ueensland bathroom designer Randall Morrison of Bathrooms Are Us is passionate about turning bathrooms green. Specialising in upmarket bathrooms for the past 21 years and a multi-award winner, his latest brainchild is an eco friendly bathroom package crammed with sustainable products and designs to help homeowners create their own dream green bathroom. What inspired you to go green? We first saw green bathrooms overseas and wanted to be able to recreate this concept in Australia -- to be able to create an environmentally friendly bathroom that didn't have harmful chemicals in it. We looked here for ideas on how to put together a package like this but couldn't find anything, so we did some research overseas and created our own package, 80 greensmart 2010 last word Splashing out on a green bathroom can have long-term health benefits. story > Louise Tigchelaar Q adapting the ideas to suit the Australian market. The research also involved finding other companies and contractors that we could work with who shared the same vision. What do your bathrooms include? The bathroom package can be fitted to suit any bathroom layout and has a number of green features, including water-efficient products and environmentally friendly paints, glues, adhesives and boards. We use only highly skilled tradespeople who have been accredited -- Dulux has an accredited program, for example -- and suppliers of green products. And we don't import boards from any country that uses formaldehyde. Pretty much all the stuff we do at Bathrooms Are Us is made locally in Australia. It's not just the products that are green, it's all the materials used ... the whole spectrum. The products all comply with the water act, the star ratings and so on and we use low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints and adhesives. What are the advantages to consumers of a green bathroom? A green bathroom minimises any health risks associated with a regular bathroom as we select products that have no leaching of formaldehyde or any sort of carcinogenic properties. The boards are all green as far as the sheeting goes. In terms of health benefits, it's miles in front. Does the package cost extra? Initially it does cost a bit more -- about $500 on top of the project -- but the return on water and efficiency savings is the main driver. And it pays you back down the track, especially in health benefits. Are there any emerging trends that you've noticed? People are very much water conscious now, more than they've been in previous years, and despite the substantial rains we've had recently, particularly in Queensland, people are still very aware of the water situation. We haven't put a spa bath in for a good 12 months and we used to install heaps of them! Where to from here? We launched the eco friendly package just 12 months ago and because it's still a relatively new concept in Australia it's an evolving process. We're continuing to look at improving the most toxic things in a bathroom like waterproofing, formaldehyde and adhesives. We will be using a lot more green materials. gs a splash of green
