Green Smart Magazine : GreenSmart 2010
48 greensmart 2010 Ten years ago, Lyn Beinat and her family were living the high-flying corporate life in London. First class travel, cleaners and a beautiful apartment in Clapham secured Lyn, her Italian husband and two sons a very comfortable life -- but something was missing. 'Basically we wanted to be able to appreciate organic fruit, farm animals, and of course, sustainable living,' Lyn says. So they swapped the UK for the Aussie bush -- Lyn's home country -- where they retrofitted a 6.5-star property in Gisborne, Victoria to provide a rural upbringing for their children in the 'real world'. Seeing how difficult it was to retrofit their own home motivated Lyn and her husband Maurice to establish ecoMaster, a company that provides green retrofit solutions in homes to permanently improve thermal performance, energy and water efficiency. 'Our vision is to be the premier climate change solution provider for the built environment,' Lyn says. Now, ecoMaster employs more than 50 staff, has trained more than 350 people all over Australia and has moved offices three times. Lyn has also won the HIA GreenSmart Professional of the Year Award. In a challenging year where many other 'green' companies went out of business, ecoMaster experienced one of its biggest achievements to date -- being asked by the federal government to work on its Green Loans program*. This involved conducting Home Sustainability Assessment Training at ecoMaster's Gisborne office, after which assessors were sent into people's homes to assess the home's energy performance for free. moving heaven + earth story > Annie Reid SEEING HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS TO RETROFIT THEIR OWN HOME MOTIVATED LYN AND HER HUSBAND MAURICE TO ESTABLISH ECOMASTER Green retrofitting is designed to make the ultimate difference to greenhouse gas emissions.
