Green Smart Magazine : 2009_new
will provide the most water savings in their homes. The more stars, the more water-efficient the product. It is estimated that by using recycled water you can reduce your drinking water usage by about 40--50 per cent. That's a big contribution to relieving our water crisis. In Australia, recycled water is classified from Class A to D according to its quality and range of uses. The highest quality, Class A, is one that can be most commonly used for daily use, including: • flushing toilets • watering the garden, including vegetables (NB: untreated greywater should only be used via subsurface irrigation for vegetables that are to be eaten raw as surface watering can pose health risks) • washing cars, outdoor furniture and the outside of buildings. No recycled water, including Class A, should be used for drinking, cooking, washing and showering, swimming pools or spas, evaporative coolers, or children's water toys. And because it is important not to confuse drinking water with recycled water, water is now delivered through separate pipes (called dual reticulation), with recycled water taps, pipes and meters now unmistakably purple to avoid the possibility of plumbers and residents accidentally mistaking recycled water for potable water. Treated wastewater for drinking remains a highly contentious issue. The 'yuk' factor -- the idea that the water you're about to drink came from a toilet bowl -- is still a huge barrier to its acceptance. But soon we may not have much choice. Watch this space! *As always, check with your local council for rules and regulations on recycled water and rainwater tanks in your area. Also check to see if you qualify for a rebate. Rebates vary between states and territories and between councils.
