Green Smart Magazine : 2009_new
58 greensmart 9 The word 'green' is loaded with meaning at Stockland's The Village mixed-use development. Located at Balgowlah in Sydney's Northern Beaches, The Village is a sustainable residential and retail development 12km north of the CBD and 2km east of Manly Beach. It features five residential towers comprising 240 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, a new shopping centre with a full-line Coles and more than 60 specialty stores, and a high quality public space with cafes and gardens set along tree-lined avenues. The benchmark development is due to be completed in a few months with the first residents occupying in June. No doubt they will be impressed with Stockland winning the 2008 HIA GreenSmart Development Design Concept of the Year Award, says Stockland Development's Steve Quill. 'Overall the reaction has been positive and we have had some really great responses. Everyone is very excited about it,' he says. The first challenge was the location -- developing a brownfield site set within an established urban environment. Alongside the obvious spatial constraints, these sites present a challenge for any developer as opportunities for greenfield developments near our cities decrease. Careful design ensures this innovative development blends in with the existing urban fabric while at the same time creating variety and individuality. blending story > Annie Reid in
