Green Smart Magazine : 2009_new
greensmart 2009 17 oofs made from COLORBOND® steel now incorporate new Thermatech® technology which reflects more of the sun's heat, leaving the roof space and therefore the home cooler. This not only assists in the improvement of a home's energy efficiency, but it also reduces its impact on the environment. A roof made from COLORBOND® steel doesn't just help one home stay cool, it can help the neighbouring homes to stay cooler too. Cooler roofs help reduce the effect of urban heat islands -- metropolitan areas that have higher air and surface temperatures than surrounding rural areas. This effect is caused by a prevalence of dark surfaces, which absorb heat from the sun. The more reflective a surface is, the less energy it absorbs and the cooler it is. Therefore a roof made from COLORBOND® steel which incorporates the new Thermatech® technology can help lower air temperatures in our COLORBOND® steel's new colour range and technological advancements provide a new level of improved thermal performance for homes. communities by reflecting solar radiation and maximising heat loss from a home's roof. The use of Thermatech® technology also means that on average, across the entire colour range, there is a reduction in solar absorbance of five per cent. As a result, seven colours in the palette are now classified as 'light' under BASIX, and there are 11 colours that may qualify for an insulation concession under the Building Code of Australia's classification system. Even darker colours perform better, which offers builders and homeowners a greater choice. And in some parts of Australia, it also means that the amount of insulation required to create a comfortable home may be reduced. The COLORBOND® steel range comes in a range of 20 contemporary designer colours, now with three new colours in the range to suit all building styles -- Loft®, Monument® and Evening Haze®.
