Green Smart Magazine : 2009_new
greensmart 9 3 welcome welcome to greensmart -- a new and essential way of thinking Ten years ago the Housing Industry Association (HIA) made a commitment to Australia's future by initiating HIA GreenSmart. This magazine -- the original 'green' building magazine for non-professionals -- is key to that commitment. greensmart is not just a magazine, it's a new and essential way of thinking for all Australians. It promotes healthier building practices and products, better energy and water efficiency, more recycling, less waste from the building or renovation process, and better management of the building site. It's about building the GreenSmart way: about how we build, not what we build, and at a price that suits you. It's a way of life that saves our natural resources and reduces energy bills by following some basic building principles, passive solar design, correct home orientation, ventilation, insulation, thermal mass and choosing smart appliances. GreenSmart homes can be extravagant or they can be simple. Ultimately, they are designed to suit everyday families who want to reduce their impact on the environment in their day-to-day lives and to enjoy the long term benefits: cheaper to run, healthier and more comfortable to live in. At the launch of greensmart magazine in 2003 there were around 500 accredited HIA GreenSmart professionals nationwide, dedicated to building and renovating sustainable homes. Now, these professionals number more than 4000 -- an indication of the growing and promising trend towards building 'greener' homes. In this issue we once again encourage and inspire you to build 'green', by celebrating and showcasing some stunning and creative award-winning GreenSmart homes and developments. It's easier being green than you think.
